Create an alias

An alias is a string of characters that represent a command. Aliases make it easier to run long commands.

  1. Enter the following command to open the .bashrc profile file by using the Vim text editor:
vim .bashrc
  1. Select i to enter Insert Mode in Vim, and then add the following two lines of text at the bottom of the .bashrc file:
alias server='date; uptime; whoami'
alias addr='ip addr show eth0; ping -c 3 localhost; hostname'
  1. Select Esc and then :wq to save your changes and exit Vim.
  2. Run the following command to cause the Bash shell to re-read the .bashrc file for user01:
source .bashrc
  1. Run the following commands to verify that the aliases function as expected:
server
addr
